In Cherthala, Alappuzha, a case has been registered against Sony (48) in connection with the death of his wife, Saji (46). The police took action after their daughter, Meeshma, filed a complaint alleging that her father was responsible for her mother’s tragic death. Based on her complaint, the police exhumed Saji’s body, which had been buried at the Muttom St Mary’s Church cemetery on Sunday, for further investigation.

Saji was admitted to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital on January 8 with severe head injuries. Her family initially told hospital authorities that she had fallen down the stairs. Saji remained on ventilator support for about a month before passing away on Sunday morning, and her funeral was held that same evening.

Initially, no suspicions arose regarding her death. However, Meeshma approached the Cherthala police on Tuesday night, claiming that her mother had been a victim of domestic violence. According to Meeshma, Sony frequently assaulted Saji, and on the night of January 8, he allegedly hit her head against a wall, causing the severe injuries that led to her death. Meeshma further claimed that Sony threatened her with a knife to prevent her from revealing the truth.

Following her complaint, the Cherthala police took Sony into custody and provided protection to Meeshma. A post-mortem examination of Saji’s body is scheduled for Thursday, and further action will depend on the findings from the autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.
