Man Arrested for Stealing Over $1.6 Million from Elderly Friend in Elizabeth, NJ

ELIZABETH, NJ — Elijah Ray, a 25-year-old resident of Elizabeth, has been arrested for allegedly stealing over $1.6 million from an elderly family friend between January 2022 and August 2024. The arrest, made on Monday, followed an investigation by Union County Prosecutors.

Details of the Fraud Scheme
According to authorities, Ray used fraudulent documents and impersonation tactics to deceive his elderly victim. He is accused of fabricating records, pretending to be a commercial driving representative, and submitting fraudulent statements. Additionally, Ray allegedly stole the victim’s ATM card and wrote checks against her account.

Charges Against Ray
Ray has been charged with the following offenses:

Second-degree theft by deception
Second-degree impersonation
Third-degree forgery
Third-degree theft by unlawful taking
Prosecutor’s Statement
Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel expressed concern over the devastating effects of financial crimes, especially those targeting vulnerable individuals. “We will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute those who exploit the trust of others for personal gain,” Daniel stated in response to the case.
