ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (FOX 56) — A man accused of posing as a law enforcement officer to scam a woman out of $10,000 was arrested on March 20, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began on March 17, when deputies responded to a fraud complaint at a bondsman’s office on Pace Boulevard. The victim reported receiving a call from a man who claimed to be with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO). The caller falsely told her that she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest and demanded that she bring $10,000 in cash to the bail bondsman’s office.
The victim agreed to meet the suspect in the parking lot, but she became suspicious when the man failed to provide proper identification. Before law enforcement could arrive, the suspect fled on foot.
Following a thorough investigation, authorities identified the suspect as Christopher Michael Roof, 47. Roof was charged with grand theft, scheme to defraud, and using a two-way communication device to facilitate a felony.
As of March 20, Roof remained in the Escambia County Jail, having failed to post a $10,000 bond.
