GRAND ISLAND, NE – A man is in custody after allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle with a child inside early Thursday morning, according to the Grand Island Police Department (GIPD).

Authorities say the incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of North Front Street, when a woman reported that an unknown male—later identified as Khamis Yaya—tried to steal her vehicle while her young child was in the back seat.

When officers arrived, they located Yaya at the scene. Police say he refused to comply with verbal commands, forcing officers to physically restrain him. He was arrested on charges of attempted theft of a motor vehicle and obstruction of a police officer.

Yaya was booked into the Hall County Department of Corrections, and no injuries were reported. The child was safely reunited with the mother.
