NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. – A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Saturday’s shooting at Sangertown Square Mall, which police say was a targeted attack.
Malachi T. Wynder, of Rome, was taken into custody in Utica and is facing charges of attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and criminal possession of a loaded firearm, according to New Hartford police.
Incident Details
Police responded to reports of gunfire at the mall around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Mall security had already begun administering aid before emergency responders transported the victim to Wynn Hospital.
Authorities quickly confirmed there was no active shooter threat, but as a precaution, law enforcement instructed people inside the mall to shelter in place while the Metro SWAT Team conducted a thorough search.
Investigation & Arrest
Police determined that the shooting was a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence. Wynder was later located in Utica and arrested with assistance from the Utica Police Department, Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, and Metro SWAT Team.
He was transported to the New Hartford Police Department for processing before being booked into the Oneida County Jail, where he awaits arraignment. Authorities stated that additional charges may be filed as the investigation progresses.
Law Enforcement & Community Response
New Hartford police extended their gratitude to Sangertown Square security, multiple law enforcement agencies, and the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office for their assistance. Police departments from New York Mills, Yorkville, and surrounding areas also supported the investigation.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
