HUTCHINSON, KS (KAKE) — A 23-year-old Hutchinson man, Malachi J. Sims, is in custody following a string of crimes on Sunday evening that included two armed robberies, a police pursuit, and a crash into a home.
At approximately 7:20 p.m., police responded to a report of an armed robbery at a business in the 500 block of East 17th Street. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had fled the scene.
Roughly 20 minutes later, a second robbery was reported at a business in the 400 block of East 4th Street, with the suspect’s description matching that of the first incident.
Just 10 minutes later, officers located a vehicle matching the suspect’s near 17th and Plum. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, the driver—later identified as Malachi J. Sims—refused to pull over, leading to a pursuit.
Sims eventually crashed the stolen vehicle into a home in the 400 block of East 18th Street, then fled on foot into a nearby occupied residence, where officers apprehended him. Investigators confirmed the vehicle Sims used had been reported stolen earlier that day from 1600 Center Street.
Sims now faces a long list of charges, including:
Robbery (x2)
Theft
Interference with law enforcement
DUI
Drug possession
Criminal possession of a firearm by a felon
He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
