BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A high-speed police chase in Jefferson County on July 24, 2025, resulted in the arrest of two identified suspects and the recovery of a stolen vehicle, illegal drugs, and multiple firearms, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The pursuit began when the department’s SNET Unit attempted to stop a Chevrolet pickup truck. The driver refused to stop, leading to a chase that ended in a crash at the intersection of Cotton Avenue and Lomb Avenue. After the crash, three male suspects tried to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended.
The truck was reported stolen by the Birmingham Police Department.
Authorities identified Makrell Jermaine Tolbert, 20, who now faces charges including:
Attempting to elude
First-degree possession of marijuana
First-degree receiving stolen property
Tolbert was released on a $7,500 bond.
The second suspect, Amare Darnell Tate, 20, was charged with:
Second-degree possession of marijuana
Receiving stolen property
He was released on a $15,000 bond.
The third suspect has not yet been formally charged.
Deputies seized:
170 grams of marijuana
A stolen 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500
Multiple firearms, including:
Smith & Wesson SD9
Glock 22 (.40 Cal)
Taurus G20 (9mm)
Glock 21 (.40 Cal)
Palmetto State Armory PA-15
A cellphone
The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be filed.
