Maitlin White Charged in Texas Flood Donation Scam

Florida woman impersonated victim’s family online

by Sophia Bennett

HOUSTON — A Florida woman is accused of running an online scam that exploited a victim of the deadly July 2025 floods in Texas’ Hill Country.

Maitlin White, 28, of Crestview, Fla., was charged by the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office with participating in a scheme in which she created fundraising campaigns shortly after the July 8 floods.

Authorities say White pretended to be the family of Chloe Childress, 19, who died at Camp Mystic during the floods. Childress was a camp counselor and had recently graduated from The Kinkaid School. White allegedly used Childress’ name and family identity to solicit donations online.

She faces two counts of online impersonation. Investigators warned the public that exploiting victims for personal gain is a serious crime and carries significant penalties.
