HARARE, ZIMBABWE — Two maids have been arrested and brought before the courts after allegedly stealing US$50,000 from their employer, Elizabeth Chitiga, a former general manager of Zimbabwe’s National Social Security Authority (NSSA).
Loveness Chagonda and Bevelima Chiroodza recently appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court, where they were charged with theft. Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai is presiding over the case.
According to prosecutors, the theft was premeditated and took place in December 2021, when Mrs. Chitiga had reportedly sold two vehicles and stored the proceeds — US$45,000 — in a safe within her home.
At the time, Chitiga was frequently hospitalised due to illness, leaving the two maids as the only individuals with regular access to the house and the room containing the safe.
Despite the significant loss, a police report was only filed in June 2025, as Chitiga’s health issues had reportedly delayed her ability to take legal action. Authorities say that some stolen items have since been recovered, including a red suitcase and assorted bed sheets belonging to Chitiga.
Both accused have been remanded in custody, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities suggest that further evidence may uncover the whereabouts of the remaining stolen funds.
The case has sparked concern over domestic worker trust and delayed reporting in similar high-value thefts.
