Two men were arrested for attempting to dupe a jewellery showroom in Delhi’s Rajendra Nagar using fake e-vouchers. The accused, Mahender Singh (26) of Sikar and Sandeep Singh (25) of Jaipur, initially succeeded in purchasing gold coins worth Rs2 lakh before trying to redeem additional fake vouchers worth Rs8 lakh.
On August 25, the duo visited a showroom on Pusa Road, using electronic vouchers to buy two gold coins. The next day, they returned with e-vouchers worth Rs8 lakh, but the staff, now cautious, verified the codes and found them to be fraudulent. Police were immediately called, and both suspects were arrested on-site.
An FIR was registered at Rajendra Nagar police station under Sections 318 (cheating) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan stated that a special team led by ACP Ashish Singh interrogated the accused. During questioning, the men disclosed that a man named Shashank from Jaipur had provided them with the fake e-vouchers via email, instructing them to redeem the vouchers at the store.
A raid on the duo’s hotel room in Paharganj led to the recovery of two 10-gram gold coins and Rs54,500 in cash. Police also uncovered Mahender’s involvement in an earlier scam in Jaipur, where he used social media to lure victims with promises of high returns under a ‘second currency’ scheme.
In that case, Mahender would call victims to meet in person, collect cash, and hand over fake parcels filled with soap bars instead of real currency. A separate FIR for that incident was registered at Sindhi Camp police station under Sections 318, 316, and 61 of BNS.
