The Medical College police on Tuesday arrested Madhu, a resident of Akkulam, for his involvement in a brazen daytime robbery where an elderly woman was tied up and robbed of her gold jewellery inside her own home.
The victim, Ushakumari, lives alone on the second floor of a three-storey building near Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram. The ground floor of the same building houses a bakery, where the accused Madhu had been working.
According to police, Madhu took advantage of his familiarity with the building and the victim’s routine. On the day of the incident, he allegedly entered Ushakumari’s home in broad daylight, tied her up, gagged her, and stole her gold ornaments before fleeing the scene.
Ushakumari has been living alone for the past five years, making her a vulnerable target. Her screams went unheard due to the gag, and the theft was discovered only when a neighbor came to check on her.
Following the incident, police launched a swift investigation and were able to identify and arrest Madhu based on local intelligence and witness accounts.
A case has been registered, and further inquiries are ongoing to determine if others were involved or if Madhu has a history of similar offenses.
