A Lynchburg man, Charles Rayburn Jr., 55, was arrested after barricading himself in his home on Friday afternoon. The arrest came after an incident where Rayburn allegedly fired a gun at a social worker during a welfare check.

At around 3:47 p.m., police responded to a gunshot in the 1900 block of Union Street. Prior to the shot, Adult Protective Services had been conducting a welfare check on a woman at the residence. Rayburn appeared from inside the home and allegedly threatened to shoot the social worker. As the worker left, Rayburn fired a shot but missed. He then barricaded himself inside the house.

After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact, police entered the home and apprehended Rayburn without further incident. No one was injured during the ordeal.

Rayburn faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, reckless handling of a firearm, discharge of a firearm within city limits, possession of a firearm while subject to a protective order, and violation of a protective order.
