Boston MBTA Transit Police have arrested Luz Pineda, 32, after she allegedly pushed an elderly woman down the stairs of a bus in the Roxbury neighborhood, causing serious injuries.
The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on September 8 at a bus stop on Warren Street. Surveillance video captured the victim being shoved down the bus stairs, flying out the front door and landing on the sidewalk. The woman lay on the pavement for about 10 minutes before paramedics arrived and transported her to a nearby hospital. She was diagnosed with a concussion and broken blood vessels.
According to prosecutors, Pineda became involved in an argument with the victim after the elderly woman was reportedly blocking the bus exit while Pineda was trying to get off with her 3-month-old daughter. After leaving the bus, Pineda allegedly changed her appearance by putting up her hair and removing her sweatshirt. Prosecutors also noted she has a probation history, though her attorney said the last issue was over seven years ago.
Pineda’s attorney stated she was coming from a medical appointment for her daughter and emphasized that Pineda is a single mother living with two children.
A judge set bail at $5,000 and ordered Pineda to stay away from the victim, all MBTA property, and any witnesses. Her next court hearing is scheduled for October 3.
The attack sparked outrage among neighbors and passengers. Witnesses expressed shock at the violent act, emphasizing the importance of respecting and protecting the elderly.
The suspect was identified through security camera footage inside the bus. Authorities continue to investigate.
