In a significant fraud case unfolding in Odisha’s twin cities, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, businessman Rohit Roshan Mohanty was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.08 crore in a luxury car scam. The accused, Sambit Panda, had presented himself as a freelance car broker and former Audi Bhubaneswar manager to gain Mohanty’s trust.

Panda convinced Mohanty to transfer large sums for a luxury vehicle, but despite receiving the payments through multiple transactions, he failed to deliver the car and eventually cut off communication. When confronted, Panda allegedly responded with threats and abusive language.

Police investigations uncovered that Panda had used forged documents and had a history of similar fraudulent activities. On June 9, 2025, he was arrested at a NEXA showroom in Cuttack. During interrogation, Panda confessed and implicated two accomplices, whose identities are still under investigation.

The Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police are now working to identify additional victims and to fully unravel the extent of this luxury car brokerage scam, highlighting the increasing risks faced by buyers in this market.
