Two men, wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a civilian and an on-duty police officer three years ago, have been arrested, senior police official Kumar Sivashish confirmed on Wednesday.
The suspects, identified as 32-year-old Lusku Mardi alias Rohit Mardi and 30-year-old Ganesh Murmu, both residents of Seraikela-Kharswan district, had evaded capture for years by frequently changing locations.
Earlier arrests had secured other individuals connected to the case. Following instructions from the Senior Superintendent of Police (East Singhbhum), Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ-1) Bhola Prasad Singh led a special task force to track down the fugitives. Acting on a tip-off, the team, led by Mango police station officer-in-charge Nityanand Prasad, conducted a raid on Tuesday, successfully apprehending the duo.
The suspects were produced in court and sent to judicial custody. According to the FIR registered on December 8, 2023, they had killed Sajjad Khan alias Tanda and shot Constable Mahato during their escape. Mahato succumbed to his injuries immediately while pursuing the suspects alongside Tiger Mobile police member Nirmal Mundu.
