WATERBURY — A city man was arrested Wednesday after a brief police chase ended in a major drug bust, according to Waterbury police.

Luis Medina-Cuevas, 31, was taken into custody shortly after 1:30 p.m. Officers from the Waterbury Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit had attempted to stop a 2012 Acura TSX near East Liberty and Baldwin streets for displaying incorrect license plates. Police say Medina-Cuevas fled the traffic stop.

Officers later located the vehicle on Wall Street. As an officer approached, Medina-Cuevas reportedly attempted to flee on foot but was quickly captured.

A search of the vehicle and suspect uncovered approximately 88.4 grams of fentanyl, 35.4 grams of crack cocaine, 202 glassine bags pre-packaged for sale, drug paraphernalia, and $2,685 in cash.

Police charged Medina-Cuevas with multiple offenses, including operating a drug factory, possession with intent to sell narcotics, sale of heroin and cocaine, engaging police in pursuit, misuse of registration plates, and interfering with an officer.

He is currently being held on a $250,000 bond.

Police noted that Medina-Cuevas was recently released from prison after serving a two-year sentence for previous drug-related offenses.
