In a major corruption bust, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested retired Lt Colonel Amarjit Singh and a contractual worker named Mukesh Kumar for allegedly demanding and accepting a Rs22 lakh bribe from a multi-speciality clinic owner in Rajasthan.
According to CBI officials, the case revolves around the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS). The clinic owner approached Singh after a team from ECHS allegedly visited his hospital and collected 20–25 ECHS cards from ex-servicemen without issuing any receipts or documentation.
Singh, who previously served as the in-charge of the ECHS polyclinic in Rajgarh, reportedly offered to “sort out” the matter in exchange for a Rs25 lakh bribe. During the discussions, Singh involved Mukesh Kumar, a clerk at the ECHS polyclinic in Hisar, who allegedly uses multiple aliases and falsely presents himself as a Colonel.
The bribe amount was eventually negotiated down to Rs22.5 lakh. It was agreed that the payment would be made at Singh’s farmhouse in Charkhi Dadri. Acting on a complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught Singh and Kumar red-handed while they were accepting the bribe.
Officials confirmed that the role of another individual, allegedly a colonel, is under investigation. The arrests raise serious questions about corruption in welfare schemes meant for ex-servicemen.
