TAMUNING, GUAM — A 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the theft of a Hyundai Tucson from a market parking lot in Tamuning, according to a magistrate’s complaint filed in the Superior Court of Guam.

The Guam Police Department responded to Minagof Mart around 10:08 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report of a stolen vehicle. The victim, who had borrowed the 2012 Hyundai Tucson, told police she left the keys in the ignition while she briefly shopped. When she returned, the vehicle was gone.

A store employee confirmed seeing the woman enter the store and noticed her confusion upon discovering the car was missing. The victim’s sister, who arrived shortly after, verified the vehicle belonged to a male relative and provided officers with further details.

Officers began canvassing the area and reviewed surveillance footage, which showed a man—described as Micronesian—stealing the vehicle and driving off toward Dungca Ville.

By 1 p.m., the victim’s sister reported a possible sighting. She directed officers to Tumon Heights Apartments, where they spoke to a man who identified the suspect as Losal Phaynid. He then assisted police in locating Phaynid’s residence nearby.

Phaynid was found at the home and taken to the Tumon precinct for questioning. After being read his Miranda Rights, which he waived, Phaynid admitted to stealing both the vehicle and the victim’s passport.

He was arrested around 2 p.m. and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, a second-degree felony, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor.
