LAREDO, Texas — Just weeks into the new academic year, Laredo ISD is grappling with its second drug-related incident, prompting immediate safety measures across its campuses.
On Friday, September 5, Lorraine Lee Vasquez was arrested by Laredo ISD Police at Ryan Elementary School and charged with possession of a controlled substance in a drug-free zone, a felony offense under Texas law. She was released on bond the following Monday.
The incident, which allegedly involved a parent bringing illegal substances onto campus, has raised concerns about school security. As a result, Laredo ISD has temporarily banned outside food from being brought onto school grounds — part of a broader effort to tighten campus safety.
“We take safety to the highest caliber,” said LISD Board President Juan Ramirez. “You can never be too safe.”
Officials confirmed that the Laredo Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Overdose Task Force are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
The district emphasized that its police department responded quickly once the issue was reported and reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe educational environment for both students and staff.
