SARDIS, Miss. — A former water department clerk for the Town of Sardis has pleaded guilty to embezzling public funds, State Auditor Shad White announced this week.

Lisa Goodson admitted to stealing cash from customer water bill payments and attempting to hide the theft by deleting the related transactions from the town’s payment system. She was charged with one count of Embezzlement of Public Funds.

“My office will continue to crack down on cases like this so we can ensure that your tax dollars are spent properly,” said Auditor White. “I’m grateful that we’re able to work with prosecutors around the state on cases like this.”

Goodson was prosecuted in Panola County Circuit Court, where she received ten years of post-release supervision. She was also ordered to pay $1,100 in fines and $1,531.68 in restitution.

The State Auditor’s Office encourages citizens to report suspected fraud involving public funds. Reports can be submitted through the Auditor’s website or by calling 1-800-321-1275 during business hours.
