DA NANG, Vietnam — Two Chinese nationals have been arrested after allegedly breaking into a private residence in Da Nang City, forcing open a safe, and stealing gold and silver before attempting to flee the city by train, police said.

Da Nang police announced Tuesday that Ling Zingfeng, 46, and Yang Jun Yun, 39, were detained for investigation on suspicion of theft.

According to authorities, a 33-year-old homeowner in Ngu Hanh Son Ward reported that his family left their residence at approximately 5 p.m. on January 24 and returned nearly three hours later to find a small safe in a bedroom pried open. Officers responding to the scene discovered signs of forced entry at a ground-floor emergency exit.

Police estimated the value of the stolen property at approximately VND300 million (about US$12,000).

Investigators said the suspects changed clothes after the burglary, discarded disguises in roadside trash bins, and fled the area in different directions. Believing the suspects were attempting to leave Da Nang, police deployed officers to bus terminals, train stations, and Da Nang International Airport.

On the night of January 25, authorities learned that Ling and Yang had purchased train tickets to Hanoi. With assistance from police in central Nghe An Province, officers arrested the suspects when the train stopped at Vinh Station.

According to police, the two men told investigators they entered Vietnam to gamble but lost their money. They allegedly then broke into multiple homes to steal valuables, transporting the stolen items to Hanoi for resale before returning to Da Nang.

Authorities said they recovered several items believed to be stolen, including eight silver bars, three gold bracelets, one gold necklace, one gold earring, and two watches. The suspects have since been transferred back to Da Nang for further investigation.
