NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND — Notts County defender Lewis Macari has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for allegedly breaching betting regulations by placing 354 bets on football matches over a period of nearly three years.
The FA alleges that the 23-year-old, who is the grandson of Manchester United legend Lou Macari, placed the bets between February 25, 2020, and December 4, 2022 — prior to his move to Notts County from Stoke City in 2023.
In an official statement released on Monday, Notts County confirmed they had been made aware of the FA charge, stating:
“We are supporting Lewis and his representatives through the investigation. We will be making no further comment at this stage.”
Macari, a product of Stoke City’s academy, made only a single senior appearance for the club before a series of loan spells, the last of which brought him to Notts County. He joined the East Midlands club permanently in 2023 and made 33 League Two appearances last season, helping the Magpies finish sixth, although they lost in the playoff semi-finals to AFC Wimbledon.
He has until July 18 to respond to the FA’s charge.
Macari has also previously represented Scotland at the U18 level.
This development adds to a growing list of FA betting cases in 2024 and 2025. Recently, Ryan Bowman, a former striker for Cheltenham and Shrewsbury, was banned for three-and-a-half years after placing over 6,000 bets. Just last week, Wimbledon’s Osman Foyo was also charged for 252 betting breaches.
