Leon McDaniel Sentenced to 17 Years for Canandaigua Shooting

Man Pleads Guilty to First-Degree Assault After Winter Shooting

by Sophia Bennett

Leon McDaniel, a Rochester resident, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after pleading guilty to first-degree assault in a shooting incident last winter outside a Canandaigua bar.

The December 28 shooting took place outside Bubby’s Tavern, where McDaniel fired multiple rounds into a crowd. One woman was struck, suffering severe injuries that permanently damaged her arm.

First Assistant District Attorney Kelly Wolford described the impact, stating, “The shot that ripped through the victim’s arm left her forever changed. She lost her independence because of the depraved actions of McDaniel.”

The investigation was led by Canandaigua police with assistance from state and Rochester authorities. The sentence was handed down by Supreme Court Justice Victoria Argento.

Wolford emphasized the seriousness of the crime, noting that McDaniel arrived in Canandaigua armed and fired his weapon when confronted. “Ontario County is safer with McDaniel in prison,” she said. “Violence will not be tolerated.”
