Leo Smith Arrested in $1M Smash-and-Grab Jewelry Heist
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a violent $1 million smash-and-grab robbery at a jewelry store in Sacramento County during the July 4 holiday weekend. Additional suspects remain at large.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said the robbery occurred around 1:15 p.m. on July 6 at a store near Stockton Boulevard and Orange Avenue in South Sacramento.
At least nine suspects were involved. One sprayed a security guard with pepper spray, while others forced entry and smashed display cases using blunt objects. Surveillance footage shows suspects taking large quantities of jewelry before fleeing in two vehicles parked outside the store.
Several employees and customers were present during the robbery, though no serious injuries were reported.
Detectives later identified 30-year-old Leo Smith of Oakland as a primary suspect. He was arrested in Hayward, where deputies found a loaded firearm in his vehicle. Smith is a convicted felon and faces charges of robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.
He is currently held at Sacramento County Main Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities continue to search for the remaining suspects.
