OAK HILL, W.Va. (WVVA) — A man has been arrested in connection with a string of copper wire thefts along Route 61 in Fayette County.
According to Sheriff Jess McMullen, deputies pulled over Lawson Shaffer of Oak Hill during a traffic stop on August 6. Inside Shaffer’s truck, authorities discovered a significant quantity of copper wire, which is believed to be stolen.
Following the discovery, Shaffer was arrested and charged with:
Felony Transferring and Receiving Stolen Goods
Felony Conspiracy
The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into copper wire thefts in the area, and was carried out during a warrant sweep by the U.S. Marshals Service’s Southern West Virginia C.U.F.F.E.D. Task Force.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the full scope of the thefts, which have affected infrastructure along Route 61.
