Laval Police Arrest Suspects in “Distraction” Jewelry Thefts

Oinescu and Alesandru accused of targeting seniors with fake gifts

LAVAL, Canada — Laval police are warning the public about a recent surge in “distraction” thefts, following the arrest of two suspects last week.

In these thefts, victims—often older adults—are approached in shopping mall parking lots by thieves who ask for directions or restaurant recommendations. During the interaction, the suspects offer the victim a “gift” in the form of fake jewelry. While placing the fake item on the victim, the thieves discreetly steal the victim’s real jewelry.

Nicolai Galatan Oinescu and Isaura Alesandru, both 29, are alleged repeat offenders who have committed similar thefts in several provinces. The pair was arrested on October 21 after a citizen witnessed them allegedly stealing jewelry from an octogenarian.

The suspects appeared in court facing a charge of theft under $5,000. They were released under conditions and are expected to return before a judge in December.

Police believe there may be additional victims connected to this case and are urging anyone affected to contact Laval police immediately via the Info-Police line at 450-662-4636 or by calling 911.

“These crimes specifically target vulnerable seniors,” authorities said, stressing the importance of remaining alert to such scams.
