GREENVILLE, S.C. — Lauren Makenzie Welborn, 29, of Greenville, was arrested Friday following allegations of Medicaid fraud, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced.

Welborn faces charges of obtaining property under false pretenses valued at $10,000 or more and medical assistance provider fraud. An investigation by the Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit revealed that between August 7, 2023, and September 12, 2024, Welborn submitted false claims to the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, which manages the state Medicaid program.

While working as an early interventionist at PlayWorks, LLC, Welborn allegedly submitted fraudulent data sheets and electronic clinician notes, falsely claiming to have provided services to 15 Medicaid beneficiaries under the age of four.

These false claims resulted in losses of $11,442.01 to the Medicaid program.

Welborn was booked into Greenville County Detention Center on June 13. The Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the case.
