Santa Clarita Deputies arrested 37-year-old Devonaoux Chavez of Lancaster early Sunday morning after he attempted to break into cars in Canyon Country by punching through their windows with his fists, according to the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.
The attempted car break-ins occurred around 9:15 a.m. in the 18000 block of Soledad Canyon Road, near a condo complex close to Jake’s Way, said Lt. Dustin Wieman of the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station.
Deputies responded after several residents called to report a man breaking into vehicles by smashing car windows with his bare hands. Upon arrival, deputies found two cars with shattered windows.
“The informant gave us a good description of the suspect,” Lt. Wieman said. “When deputies arrived, they located him and tried to detain him, but he ran on foot.”
Chavez ran approximately 200 feet before deputies used force to stop him. He sustained minor injuries from the force used and cuts to his hands, believed to be from breaking the car windows.
Chavez was arrested on suspicion of attempted grand theft auto and taken to a local hospital for treatment before being booked into custody.
Deputies indicated that it did not appear Chavez successfully stole any items from the vehicles but believe he was attempting to steal the cars themselves.
