Police in Indonesia have arrested Lamar Ahchee, a 43-year-old Australian man from Cairns, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 1.7 kilograms of cocaine into the country. The arrest occurred last Thursday at an apartment in Canggu, south Indonesia.
Local media Bhinneka Nusantara reported that Ahchee allegedly used the postal service to send cocaine from the United Kingdom to Indonesia, where it was meant for distribution.
Police Chief Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya told reporters two packages were sent from England on April 12 to addresses in North Kuta and Badung Regency. The packages arrived in Denpasar on Tuesday and were flagged by customs officers after X-ray scans suggested they contained narcotics.
Customs coordinated a controlled delivery with the Police Narcotics Directorate, keeping the packages under surveillance. Authorities allege Ahchee contacted two drivers to pick up and deliver the packages to an address in Badung Regency.
Ahchee was arrested at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Thursday while receiving the packages. Police also found a digital scale, plastic wrapping, and a mobile phone in his room.
Ahchee now faces severe penalties under Indonesia’s strict drug laws, including the death penalty.
