LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — A 21-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of an infant found at a residence on Park Avenue last Wednesday, according to the Lexington Police Department.

Authorities confirmed the arrest of Laken Snelling on Saturday. She has been charged with Abuse of a Corpse, Tampering with Physical Evidence, and Concealing the Birth of an Infant. Snelling, who police say is the mother of the deceased infant, is currently being held at the Fayette County Detention Center.

Officers responded to a call about an unresponsive infant around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at a home in the 400 block of Park Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered the infant had died. The Fayette County Coroner’s Office will determine and release the official cause of death.

In a statement, the University of Kentucky acknowledged that Snelling had been a member of its STUNT cheer team for the past three seasons, but declined further comment, referring all questions to Lexington Police.

The investigation is ongoing.
