South Sulawesi Police have arrested two individuals suspected of conducting a social media-based phone scam targeting TikTok users. The suspects, identified as La Tamming (37) and Yama (32), were arrested in separate locations — La Tamming in Sidrap Regency and Yama in Wajo Regency.
According to Iptu Dendi Eriyan of the South Sulawesi Police Resmob Unit, the two suspects carried out fraud by advertising cheap branded cellphones, such as iPhones, on the TikTok platform. Once victims showed interest, the suspects moved the conversation to WhatsApp, where they would demand payment for shipping and other fees.
One reported case involved a student from Gowa Regency who was lured by an ad offering a new iPhone for Rp 5 million. After transferring the funds as instructed, the student never received the promised phone.
Following a report by the victim, the police traced the suspects using a special search application and successfully arrested both individuals. During interrogation, the suspects admitted to scamming multiple buyers through the TikTok app.
Yama, the female suspect, acted as the operator, communicating with and convincing victims to send money. La Tamming is believed to be the mastermind behind the operation.
Police seized several pieces of evidence, including seven Android phones, two bags, and one wallet. The suspects and the evidence have been handed over to the Special Criminal Investigation Directorate of the South Sulawesi Police.
Both suspects are now in custody and under further investigation as authorities continue to develop the case.
