MINEOLA, N.Y. – Kyle Matthews and Isaiah Gonzalez, both 23, have been convicted of second-degree murder and weapon possession in a 2023 gang-related shooting that left one man dead and three others injured outside a Valley Stream party venue.
A Nassau County jury returned the verdict on April 10, 2025, following a trial before Judge Helene Gugerty. Both men were found guilty of:
Murder in the Second Degree (A-I felony)
Conspiracy in the Second Degree (B felony)
Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (C felony)
A third defendant, Kenny Greene, 24, was acquitted of conspiracy charges.
Sentencing for Matthews and Gonzalez is scheduled for May 9, 2025, with each facing a maximum of 65 years to life in prison.
According to District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly, the shooting was part of a planned gang retaliation. On the evening of August 21, 2023, Matthews and Gonzalez approached a crowd outside a party on Ocean Avenue and opened fire with two .380 caliber pistols.
Deandre Carter, 20, was fatally struck in the chest. Three others, including a 12-year-old child, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation, aided by both the Nassau County Police Department and the NYPD’s Gun Violence Suppression Unit, revealed surveillance footage showing the suspects arriving in a Mercedes-Benz shortly before the shooting and fleeing the scene afterward.
Matthews was arrested on September 6, 2023, in Far Rockaway.
Gonzalez was apprehended on September 8, 2023, in Manhattan.
DA Donnelly condemned the attack as a “brutal and senseless act of gang violence”, emphasizing her office’s commitment to prosecuting such crimes to the fullest extent.
The case was prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Brian Rodriguez of the Homicide Bureau. Defense attorneys include George Michel for Matthews, Jason Russo for Gonzalez, and Greg Madey for Greene.
