by Sophia Bennett

DEER RIVER, Minn. — A 36-year-old Deer River man, Kyle Kannas, was taken into custody Friday morning following a standoff with law enforcement attempting to execute a felony arrest warrant.

According to the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, officers arrived at a residence in Deer River around 7:15 a.m. in an effort to arrest Kannas. Upon arrival, they were informed that he was possibly inside the home and potentially armed.

Law enforcement, including K-9 units, quickly established a perimeter and began negotiations to resolve the situation peacefully. Due to Kannas’s repeated lack of compliance and concerns that there were firearms inside the home, authorities deployed specialized resources to ensure the safety of officers, residents, and the suspect.

At approximately 10:00 a.m., officers successfully located and arrested Kannas without further incident.

No injuries were reported to law enforcement, civilians, or the suspect. Kannas was transported to the Itasca County Jail and remains in custody.
