Kurnool police on Friday arrested two women from Maharashtra in connection with the theft of gold ornaments worth several lakhs at the APSRTC bus station.
The incident occurred on November 30, when Sharada, a resident of Koilakuntla, was waiting to board a bus after arriving from Hyderabad with her husband. Amid the crowded bus station, the suspects allegedly posed as travellers and stole a wallet containing nine tolas of gold from her bag before fleeing.
After receiving the complaint, police registered a case and reviewed CCTV footage from the bus station. Teams were deployed across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam to track the suspects. Despite these efforts, the accused initially remained at large.
With the Sankranti festival increasing passenger movement, the Fourth Town Police intensified surveillance, deploying plainclothes officers. During this operation, two women acting suspiciously at the bus station were detained with the help of women police personnel.
They were identified as Rozi Sultana (45) and Sheikh Rafiqa (65), both from Akola district, Maharashtra. During questioning, the women confessed to multiple bag-lifting incidents and thefts in various locations. Police discovered that similar cases had been previously registered against them in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
Inspector Bandar Vallamshetty VikramaSimha stated that the investigation is ongoing to determine whether the suspects were involved in additional thefts across the region.
