Kuniyamuthur police arrested six individuals on Tuesday in Kovaipudur, seizing 1,200 drug pills and 700 grams of cannabis during a targeted anti-drug operation.

The arrested have been identified as M. Fiyaz Ali (30), S. Kavi Nilavan (25), S. Saranraj (24), S. Abdul Rahman (23), M. Nowfal (25), and S. Safeeq Ali (33), all residents of Suguna Puram in Kuniyamuthur.

Police said a special team was formed after receiving intelligence inputs about drug peddling in the city. During a search near Perur Main Road, close to a petrol bunk in Kovaipudur, the team intercepted the group. On questioning, the accused allegedly admitted to selling marijuana and drug pills to students and members of the public.

A police officer said the gang frequently travelled to various states to procure cannabis and drug pills, which were then sold to youths, including students, in the city. The accused were also reportedly consuming the drugs themselves.

The six were handed over to Kuniyamuthur police, who registered a case under Sections 20(b)(II)(A) and 22(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police also seized a mobile phone used for drug peddling. The accused were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday evening.
