Nilagiri police arrested a 56-year-old woman, Kuna Rout, in connection with the electrocution death of her neighbor, Tapas Das (22), who died while plucking flowers from her garden.

The incident occurred in Sanatara, ward no-5, under Nilagiri municipality. According to IIC Gobardhan Nayak, locals had been taking flowers from Kuna’s garden without permission for several days. To prevent further theft, Kuna reportedly charged her flowering trees and plants with a live wire, connected to an electricity pole on Thursday night.

The next morning, Tapas entered the garden to pluck flowers, came into contact with the live wire, and was electrocuted instantly. Passersby discovered him and raised the alarm, after which local residents found him dead.

Police, assisted by a scientific team from Balasore, investigated the scene. Following a complaint lodged by Tapas’ parents against Kuna and her son, a case was registered, and both were questioned.

During interrogation, Kuna admitted to wiring the garden, which directly caused Tapas’ death. She was arrested and produced before the court, while investigations continue.
