In a shocking revelation, a newborn trafficking racket has come to light in Guwahati, Assam, after a baby was allegedly sold to a couple from Nalbari district for Rs2 lakh.
The sale took place on March 30 near the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), following the mother’s discharge. The incident surfaced after a complaint was lodged in Nalbari and subsequently transferred to the Bhangagarh police station in Guwahati, where the alleged transaction occurred.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mrinal Deka confirmed that no complaint was received from GMCH, nor did the hospital report a missing infant. However, police investigations revealed that the child was sold post-discharge, suggesting that the trafficking happened outside the hospital’s direct purview.
Arrested Individuals:
Kulen Talukdar – Reportedly childless, allegedly sought a baby through illegal means.
Bhaskar Talukdar – Kulen’s brother, a medical representative, who arranged the deal.
Champi Basumatary – Acted as an intermediary in the transaction.
Munu Hoque – Also involved in brokering the sale.
According to sources, Bhaskar Talukdar met a woman in a hotel in Garchuk, Guwahati, where negotiations over the infant’s price took place. On March 30, the seller contacted the Talukdar brothers and summoned them to a hill behind GMCH to finalize the sale.
Authorities now suspect a larger child trafficking network could be operating in the city, using such transactions as part of a more organized racket. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further links and potential accomplices.
The Assam Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to child trafficking or illegal adoptions.
