In a successful operation, the Government Railway Police (GRP) have arrested a 35-year-old man from Andhra Pradesh, identified as ‘Kosu’ Venkatesh, for a series of mobile phone thefts from passengers at Chennai’s busy railway stations.

The case came to light when P. Chandran (59) of Sithalapakkam lodged a complaint at GRP Egmore on June 18, reporting that his mobile phone had been stolen while traveling from Egmore to Tambaram.

Following the complaint, GRP officials launched a detailed investigation and reviewed CCTV footage from Egmore railway station. Officers spotted a man moving suspiciously on the platform, who was later confirmed to be involved in the theft.

The suspect was identified as Venkatesh, a native of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, who frequently targeted crowded platforms to steal mobile phones.

Police said Venkatesh has been involved in multiple thefts and often traveled across states to avoid detection. He has now been taken into custody and is being questioned for other possible offences linked to his name.

The GRP emphasized the importance of passenger vigilance and encouraged travelers to immediately report suspicious activity or thefts at railway stations.
