Kolkata Police arrested six individuals in connection with two separate theft cases on the same day that Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar conducted surprise inspections across the city, police sources said.
Four of the arrested, residents of Anand in Gujarat, were taken into custody by the ‘Watch’ branch of the Intelligence Department from the Hastings area. They have been identified as Anil Ramju Salat, Dhiru Kalobhai Salat, Sameerbhai Salat, and Raju Kumar. These individuals were accused in a theft case filed at Jorasanko police station on January 14, and police had been searching for them for the past month.
Meanwhile, two local residents from Entally, Mohammad Shahnawaz (alias Sunny) and Mohammad Sameer, were arrested from the Park Circus area. They are accused of stealing items, including mobile phones and cash, from a cab driver’s car while he was sleeping. This case was registered at Girish Park police station on January 20.
All six accused were scheduled to be produced in court on Sunday.
Commissioner Supratim Sarkar had recently instructed that police patrols should be more visible during peak hours to enhance public safety. He personally monitored patrol operations on Saturday, which coincided with these arrests, highlighting the effectiveness of proactive policing in curbing crime.
