In a major crackdown on synthetic narcotics, Kochi police arrested 31-year-old doctor Amjad Ahasan from Vadakkekara, North Paravur, after finding him in possession of MDMA, a synthetic drug. The arrest took place near Pulleppady Road close to Lisie Hospital during a special operation conducted by the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF).
Dr. Ahasan was caught with 0.83 grams of MDMA while allegedly attempting to procure the drug. The police had been monitoring him for over a month following an intelligence tip-off. The operation was supervised by Kochi City Police Commissioner and led by Narcotics Assistant Commissioner K. A. Abdul Salam.
Though the amount seized is within the limit for station bail under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, authorities plan to produce Dr. Ahasan in court. The involvement of a medical professional in a drug case has raised serious concerns about potential misuse of medical environments.
This arrest highlights the growing challenge of synthetic drug abuse in Kerala, with officials cautioning that medical professionals are not immune to addiction. The case has sparked worries about small narcotics networks operating within sensitive spaces like hospitals.
Kerala police have ramped up their efforts through Operation D-Hunt, arresting numerous suspects and confiscating large quantities of drugs including MDMA and ganja. Recently, in another case in Kochi, police seized 277 grams of MDMA from a major peddler.
Dr. Amjad Ahasan’s arrest is a stark reminder of how drug abuse can penetrate unexpected sectors of society, prompting calls for ongoing vigilance and preventive measures, especially among young professionals.
