The North Bay Police Service has arrested a man in connection with a fraud that cost a local resident more than $14,000.
Police say the victim was tricked into believing a close friend was facing an urgent crisis and needed immediate financial help. The scam escalated when a second caller, posing as the friend’s “lawyer,” coordinated cash pickups directly from the victim’s home.
Investigators arrested 26-year-old Kishaun Permanand of Brant, Ontario on December 2. He has been charged with fraud over $5,000. During the arrest, officers also seized a 2009 Mercedes tied to the investigation.
The NBPS Criminal Investigations Section, including Fraud and Intelligence, led the case with assistance from the Patrol Section.
Inspector Scott McFarlane warned the public about rising fraud attempts:
“Scammers are targeting local residents of all ages by exploiting emotions and creating pressure. These investigations are complex, and our members are working diligently to safeguard the community.”
Permanand was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
