In a dramatic breakthrough, Mandya district police arrested five suspects, including the prime accused Kiran (24), in the Kirugavalu jewellery shop theft and murder case. During the operation, police opened fire on Kiran after he allegedly attacked a constable with a knife, injuring him in the right leg.
The police action took place near Ichagere in Malavalli taluk, when Kiran resisted arrest. Circle Inspector Sridhar of Halaguru Police Station fired at Kiran in self-defence. Kiran is currently being treated at the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences.
The incident dates back to August 17, when a gang broke into a jewellery shop in Kirugavalu village using a gas cutter to open the shutter around 3 am. They looted 110 grams of gold and 2 kilograms of silver. Tragically, a hotel owner named Madappa, who witnessed the crime, was strangled to death by the gang to prevent exposure.
Following an intensive investigation led by SP Mallikarjun Baladandi, six special teams were deployed. The investigation led to a series of arrests:
Anand (30) – Arrested in Swarnasandra, Mandya Town
Kiran (24) – Caught in Ichagere
Sharath (24) – Nabbed in Kottatti
Srinivas (22) – Arrested in Kangali
Krishnachari (40) – Detained in Chikka Mandya
Anand was already wanted in a vehicle theft case in Kerala, further compounding his criminal record.
