On Thursday, September 4, the Kinston Police Department’s C-Squad conducted two traffic stops that resulted in drug-related arrests, thanks to the assistance of their K-9 officer, Kilo.

During the first stop, K-9 Kilo performed an open-air sniff around the vehicle of 64-year-old Shirly Grady. The alert led officers to discover crack cocaine, drug paraphernalia, and a concealed handgun. Grady was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of Schedule II drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Later the same day, officers stopped 70-year-old Robert Williams, who had an outstanding warrant related to a drug case. K-9 Kilo again alerted officers to the presence of contraband in Williams’ vehicle. A search uncovered crack cocaine, resulting in Williams being charged with possession of Schedule II drugs, in addition to his outstanding warrant.

K-9 Kilo’s keen sense of smell played a key role in both arrests, underscoring the importance of K-9 units in law enforcement efforts against drug-related crimes.
