FORT CALHOUN, Neb. – Kierrie Williams, convicted of murdering 65-year-old Father Stephen Gutgsell at Saint John The Baptist Catholic Church, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison. An additional 50 years were added for burglary, possessing a firearm during a felony, and possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person.

Williams initially pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity but changed his plea to guilty last month. Under the sentence, he will not be eligible for parole.

The killing occurred inside the church rectory, shocking the Fort Calhoun community and prompting a thorough investigation that led to Williams’ conviction.
