Khurda: Balipatna police on Thursday arrested a 35-year-old man, Mithun Nath, for allegedly stabbing a youth to death near Triveniswar Temple at Bhapur village in Khurda district.

According to a complaint lodged by the victim’s father, Umesh Nath, the incident occurred around 11:40 pm on January 20, 2026. His son, Upendra Nath alias Lipu, had returned home after attending the Triveni Mahotsav festival near the temple.

A verbal altercation reportedly broke out when Upendra scolded his sister, who had returned late from the festival. Mithun Nath, a distant relative of Upendra, was present during the argument and allegedly intervened, abusing Upendra before the situation escalated to the fatal stabbing.

Police have taken Mithun Nath into custody and are investigating the circumstances that led to the violent incident.
