Keonjhar police arrested 27-year-old Smruti Ranjan Swain of Raghunathpur village, Jagatsinghpur district, on Wednesday for duping a woman by posing as a CRPF jawan. Since November 2024, Swain allegedly blackmailed the woman and defrauded her of Rs 7.5 lakh.
On August 19, 2025, he mortgaged her earrings at a bank and withdrew Rs 1,29,000. Suspecting foul play, the woman filed a complaint at Town police station on the same day.
Police seized fake police uniforms, boots, commando and Cobra badges, counterfeit CRPF ID cards, nameplates, multiple mobile phones, a pair of gold earrings, ATM cards, Aadhaar cards, photos, a bike, and 83 PhonePe transaction screenshots.
Swain had earlier been charged at Capital police station in Bhubaneswar, and investigations are ongoing.
