WALDORF, Md. — On July 4, 2025, patrol officers from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kent Leroy Smith Jr., 34, after a domestic-related incident and a dramatic foot and vehicle chase. Smith, a convicted felon, had three active warrants, including for first-degree assault.

The incident began at 7:19 a.m. in the 9400 block of Super Street, where a female caller reported hiding from Smith due to threats he made. Upon arrival, officers learned Smith had active warrants and attempted to stop his vehicle. Smith fled, eventually crashing into a creek on a dead-end street. He abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Inside the vehicle, police recovered a loaded handgun, which Smith is legally prohibited from possessing due to prior convictions. A tip from a resident helped officers locate Smith hiding in a backyard.

During the arrest attempt, Smith resisted, allegedly striking two officers, causing all to fall. He was subdued, treated for minor injuries, and transported to the Charles County Detention Center. The two officers were also treated for minor injuries.

While evading arrest, Smith reportedly attempted to break into two homes and stole an electric bicycle, which has been recovered. He now faces multiple new charges, including:

Aggravated assault

Assault on law enforcement

Firearm violations

Burglary

Theft

Resisting arrest

He was also served four outstanding warrants related to a previous felony assault case and probation violations involving burglary and firearm use during a violent crime. Smith is currently being held without bond.

Under Maryland law:

First-degree assault carries up to 25 years in prison.

First-degree burglary may carry a 7-year sentence if it involves a dwelling.

Felon-in-possession firearm charges include mandatory minimums.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office praised the community for providing key information that led to Smith’s capture and urges residents to report suspicious activity. An investigation into the domestic threats and attempted burglaries is ongoing.
