FENTON, Mo. (WKRC) — A 73-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting and killing his wife. The incident occurred in Jefferson County, with Kenneth Paulter reportedly telling deputies that he was “exhausted” from taking care of his wife, Karen, who had mental health issues.
According to a probable cause affidavit obtained by local outlet KMOV, deputies responded to the home at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Friday, where they were let inside by Kenneth. Upon entering, they found Karen Paulter deceased from a gunshot wound in a bedroom. Kenneth reportedly admitted to shooting his wife and handed over the firearm used in the incident.
Kenneth told authorities that he had grown increasingly worn out from caring for his wife but did not want her to die in a nursing home. He stated that he chose a specific cartridge and shot placement to make her death as “humane” as possible. Kenneth also expressed that he “no longer wants to live” and wished to end his life to be with his wife.
Kenneth Paulter was arrested and is facing charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
