TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBMA) — A sweeping year-long investigation by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) has led to the arrest of 10 individuals connected to a violent criminal enterprise responsible for at least 10 shootings and over $1 million in bank fraud.
Captain Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa VCU announced that 75 indictments have been filed against the suspects, who were involved in a string of attacks and frauds dating from July 2023 to May 2024. The suspects include:
Kenneth Duncan, 23
Tommy Summerville, 32
Donterio Nickson, 23
Jakilyn Nevels, 23
Steven Hill Jr., 24
Antwone Stowe
Frederick Micken
Three juveniles (names withheld due to age)
The group allegedly engaged in numerous violent incidents, including firing into homes, apartments, and vehicles — often with automatic weapons. Many victims were innocent bystanders, mistaken for gang rivals or caught in the crossfire.
Notable incidents include:
July 8, 2023: Man shot in the face at a gas station.
Jan 21, 2024: Two separate apartment complexes hit by automatic gunfire.
May 22, 2024: Around 100 rounds fired into six occupied apartments and stolen motorcycle linked to suspects.
May 25, 2024: Kenneth Duncan and others charged with capital murder in Pickens County.
Authorities also revealed that the group used financial fraud, including schemes involving bank tellers, to fund their operations. The full scope of that fraud is still under investigation.
Charges vary by suspect but include:
Kenneth Duncan: Assault, theft, discharging firearms, and use of a machine gun in a criminal enterprise (30-year enhancement).
Tommy Summerville: Similar charges with additional criminal enterprise enhancement.
Donterio Nickson: Charged federally with possession of a machine gun.
Others: Charged with combinations of discharging into dwellings, theft, and gang-related firearm use.
The suspects will be prosecuted under Alabama’s Criminal Enterprise Act (SB 143), which increases penalties for individuals engaged in organized crime.
“This is a small group causing the vast majority of violence,” said Captain Jack Kennedy. “We expect more charges as the investigation continues.”
Authorities urge anyone with more information to contact the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.
