WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Kelvin Smith, 29, of Winter Haven, was arrested on June 21, 2025, following a stolen vehicle report and discovery of trafficking amounts of MDMA, fentanyl, and a firearm in his possession. Smith, who has a history of felony convictions, now faces several serious felony charges.
The incident began around 8 p.m. when the victim was asked by a female companion to pick up Smith, whom she called “Junior.” After Smith got into the vehicle, he took control of the driver’s seat when the victim was uncertain of the route to Smith’s home. Upon arrival, Smith reportedly warned the victim and his friend not to leave him, removed the keys from the ignition, and displayed a handgun in his waistband before entering the residence.
Fearing for their safety, the victim and his friend fled and contacted law enforcement. By the time officers arrived, Smith had already fled in the stolen vehicle. Authorities later located the vehicle and apprehended Smith.
During the arrest, officers found MDMA on Smith’s person. A search of the vehicle revealed additional MDMA, methamphetamine, fentanyl, syringes, and a handgun. Smith claimed he was only holding the drugs and denied knowledge of the firearm.
Smith was booked into Polk County Jail facing the following charges:
Armed Trafficking of MDMA (Life Felony)
Armed Trafficking of Fentanyl (Life Felony)
Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon (Second-Degree Felony)
Possession of Ammunition by Convicted Felon (Second-Degree Felony)
